Benefits of Online Therapy

After the pandemic, online therapy has been growing in prominence. Now, there are many therapists, like myself, that exclusively offer online therapy. So, let's dig deeper into whether or not it could be beneficial for you. 🤔

Research has shown that online therapy can be just as effective as in-person therapy. This is because the most important factor in successful therapy is the relationship between you and your therapist. If you feel connected to your therapist, feel understood by them, and believe that they will support you in the ways that you need, therapy will be effective regardless of the environment therapy takes place in.

This doesn't mean that online therapy is suitable for everyone. Some people prefer being in-person. Additionally, online therapy requires that you have a strong, reliable internet connection, as well as a private space where you feel safe and will not be interrupted. This isn't possible for everyone, so in-person therapy may be a better option in this case.

Okay, so what are the actual benefits of online therapy? Here's a few possible benefits:

Flexibility

With online therapy, you can have sessions wherever you are. Maybe you travel for work or are taking a vacation and want to be able to have a session. Or perhaps you want to do a session over your lunch break but don't have time to drive anywhere. If you work from home, you can easily schedule a session into your day. I've met with clients who were in another province visiting family, who were out on the field during harvest, or in their car during their lunch break. Obviously you don't have to do sessions from your car, tractor, or parents' house, but the option is there if you need it.

Save Money & Time

Since you can have sessions from home, or wherever else you are, you save time and money by having no commute. Now, you only need an hour to set aside for your session rather than having to add commute time, parking, and all the little extra things that come up along the way.

Therapist Options

When looking for an in-person therapist, you typically start by seeing which therapists are in your neighbourhood. Online therapy allows you to find a therapist that is a good fit for you rather than simply choosing who is closest to you. You can find someone who specializes in a certain topic or someone whose vibe you just really like. This therapist could be in another city or across the country.

Accessibility

Online therapy makes it possible to people with physical limitations to be able to access mental health services. Unfortunately, many therapist offices are not in accessible buildings, so this removes that barrier. If you experience severe anxiety, online therapy can reduce the barriers of physically going out and meeting with a therapist. Additionally, online therapy expands therapy access to rural communities where the nearest therapist is hours away; all you need is a strong internet connection. It also makes therapy possible for families that do not live in the city, as well as couples where one partner travels for work.

Increased Safety & Comfort

Since you can have therapy sessions from home, this can increase the amount of safety and comfort that you have during your sessions. You can have them from you bed, wrapped up in your favourite blanket. Maybe you snuggle your pet or a stuffed animal. Since you are in your own space, you have access to all the things that make you feel really comfortable, and that may make it easier to open up, be vulnerable, and feel uncomfortable feelings.

These benefits make online therapy a great option for people who don't have the time to commute, who don't like in-person therapy, who work from home, or are on the go often. This form of therapy is more accessible and flexible, which allows you to attend therapy in a way that works best for you! Many therapists offer online therapy, and some therapists exclusively offer online therapy. If these benefits sound good to you, reach out to a therapist to begin online therapy! 😊
