Walk and Talk Therapy involves conducting sessions while walking outside. It usually takes place in parks and on trails, depending on one's location. Walk and Talk Therapy draws on the strengths of being in nature and moving our bodies, combining this with normal talk therapy. Although this form of therapy is not a great fit for everyone, it has shown to have incredible benefits for many people.

Here are some of the benefits that Walk and Talk Therapy can offer:

  1. Reduces Stress: Walking outdoors amidst natural surroundings has a calming effect on the mind. The combination of physical activity and exposure to nature helps reduce stress levels. The rhythmic movement of walking and the tranquil environment can create a sense of relaxation and peace.

  2. Improves Emotional Regulation: Due to being in a calming environment, it can be easier to learn emotional regulation skills because you are surrounded by things you can use to calm yourself. Although the purpose is not exposure therapy, there may be moments where you can practice regulating your emotions in public within an environment that you can come back to at any time.

  3. Reduces Anxiety: Walk and Talk Therapy has shown to have incredible benefits for reducing anxiety. The movement of walking in nature can calm our brains while we process thoughts, emotions, and experiences. Nature also allows us to practice grounding techniques that can be easily replicated outside of session, and it helps us focus on being more present, which is something Anxiety tends to pull us away from.

  4. Reduces Depression: Being out in nature and moving our bodies can be incredibly impactful for depression; however, it can be very difficult to do. Moving sessions outside can create accountability because your therapist will exercise with you. It's kinda a "two birds with one stone" action.

  5. Connects us with Nature: Nature in and of itself is healing. When we feel at one with the earth, we tend to see all life as interconnected, which can make it easier to accept and love ourselves, connect with others, take care of our planet, and have a new outlook on the meaning of life.

  6. Improves Overall Well-being: Did you know that studies show that we need a minimum of 2hrs of time in nature per week in order to reap nature's benefits? The more time you are out in nature, the greater it's impact on your well-being. Taking your session outside can be one way of helping you reap those wonderful benefits that flow into every aspect of our lives: physical, mental, spiritual, relational.

Maybe you've been wanting to get outside more, and this would be your motivation. Maybe you already love being out in nature and are excited about the idea of walking therapy, or perhaps, you just hate the confines of the therapy room. Whatever the reason, if you think Walk and Talk Therapy could benefit you, try it!

We offer Walk and Talk Therapy in Winnipeg, along the river paths, but if you aren't local, there are so many other places that offer walk and talk therapy. We were meant for connection, and that's to nature too! So, get outside and reap all of nature's wonderful benefits.
